Stage Designs of the Duke | Staatstheater Meiningen

Multimedia Prospect Show 2021/22

A groundbreaking multimedia theatre project that brought 19th-century stage designs back to life through contemporary video projection technology. In collaboration with the Meiningen State Theatre and the Theatre Museum "Zauberwelt der Kulisse," this production revived the legendary painted backdrops created by the Brückner Brothers for Theatre Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen.

Project Scope:

  • Video Design & Projection Mapping for historical theatre backdrops
  • Multi-projector setup bringing 76 restored stage designs to life
  • Integration of aerial drone footage of Meiningen
  • Performance synchronization with video content

Historical Context: The original backdrops, measuring 32m wide by 14m high, were painted by the renowned Coburg-based Brückner Brothers between 1874-1876. Duke Georg II revolutionized European theatre with historically accurate productions, establishing Meiningen as the birthplace of modern directorial theatre. These touring productions traveled from Stockholm to Trieste, from London to Moscow, influencing theatre luminaries including Stanislavski and Max Reinhardt.

Technical Approach: After 20 years in storage, the fragile originals could no longer be displayed safely. Working with high-resolution photography of the restored backdrops, I developed a video projection system that merged historical imagery with contemporary storytelling. Three projectors recreated the monumental scale and luminous quality of the original painted cloth while enabling dynamic transitions and narrative layers.

The production dramatized the artistic rivalry between Duke Georg II and Richard Wagner, both competing for the Brückner Brothers' time and talents. Actors performed alongside projections that virtually resurrected the master painters, demonstrating their techniques and creative process.

Preservation Innovation: This project established a new model for presenting historical theatre artifacts that are too fragile for traditional display—using digital technology not to replace but to honor and animate cultural heritage.

Live Performances at Fulldome Festival Jena

As visual artist TOBE, I was invited three times to the renowned Fulldome Festival Jena between 2020 and 2024 – a special distinction, as repeated invitations to this internationally most significant festival for immersive 360° media art underscore artistic quality and innovation.

21.11.2020 – The OhOhOhs

For my performance with the piano-drumset duo The OhOhOhs, I created live visualizations in the 360° dome of the Zeiss Planetarium Jena. The audiovisual composition was awarded the Janus Award of Excellence in the category "Visual Music in the Dome" – the "Oscar" of the fulldome scene. The jury praised the performance as "overwhelming" and highlighted how we succeeded, despite working together in the dome for the first time, in creating a "compelling, sometimes breathtaking" symbiosis. My algorithmic 360° mappings responded in real-time to the precision of the music and opened up the space for an immersive experience.

09.10.2021 – Martin Hübner feat. C. Kohlhaas

For this performance, I developed the fulldome projections, where experimental soundscapes merged with generative visuals. The live visualization responded to the musical structures and created an immersive space for the sound art.

24.05.2024 – Duo Con:trust

At my third invitation to the festival, I created the visual accompaniment for the accordion duo Con:trust. The performance combined the acoustic sound worlds of the accordions with reactive 360° visualizations in the historic Zeiss Planetarium Jena.

These three invitations to the world's oldest continuously running fulldome festival (founded in 2007) document my long-standing expertise in creating immersive live experiences, where real-time visualization and musical performance merge into a Gesamtkunstwerk.

30th Anniversary Facade Projection | KVT Thüringen

Architectural Video Mapping | Weimar, 2021

A celebratory facade projection for the 30th anniversary of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Thüringen (KVT), transforming the organization's headquarters building in Weimar into an illuminated canvas. This architectural projection honored three decades of coordinating ambulatory healthcare for over 1.9 million insured residents across Thüringen.

The projection visualized the evolution of regional healthcare infrastructure and the organization's commitment to accessible medical care.

Technical Implementation:

  • Large-scale facade projection mapping on the KVT headquarters
  • Content development celebrating healthcare milestones
  • Architectural integration respecting the building's structure

100 Jahre Bauhaus: AV_Stream 100: Live-Performance

The STUDIO100 Werkraum AV.Stream investigated potentials of improvised, visual performance within a scenic experimental setup. While improvisation has always played an important role in music, it has a niche existence in the field of artistic visual media. Too familiar is the idea of film as a documentary medium. Even television, which understands to be "live", has not produced its own tradition of artistic, virtuoso performance that does not depict the exterior but represents the interior. The video artists invited to the Werkraum, however, have developed their working methods in the brutal environment of the techno clubs and refined them on the theater stages.

The workshop gave me the opportunity to invite some great artists and friend to my favorite laboratory, the Gaswerk in Weimar. We started quite basic by finishing the screens that HP Großmann had welded before. Once the technical setup was established, we could start to epxlore the new instrument. For this we followed a simple rule: All content should be produced on location, that was true for the musicians Marc Sauter and Martin Schwengner and even more so for the video artists Swen Seyerlein, Benjamin Jantzen, Tobias Mathes and Stefan Kraus.

The basic idea was to send the image from artist to artist. Each artists manipulation is visible on the screen above their heads. The audience can see clearly who is working on what part of the image. At some point, the output of the last artist in the chain was fed back to the first artist as an input, creating a feedback loop. At this moment, the image becomes like a flow, that changes at each iteration but also travels in time and through the screens that become like windows in that stream. Every little manipulation affects the composition of everybody else. The setup had turned into a collaborative visual instrument.

While exploring the endless possibilities that were now at our hands, we looked for ways to turn the experience we had while jamming into an experience for the audience, by visually explaining what we did and framing free improvisation with dramaturgic interventions to create a dense 40 minute live performance. This was to be presented on the last day of the workshop to the Weimar audience.

Facade Projection for the Hundertwasser Exhibition

Kunsthaus Apolda Avantgarde, 12.06.–19.12.2021

For the blockbuster exhibition "Friedensreich Hundertwasser – Beauty Is a Panacea" at Kunsthaus Apolda Avantgarde, I created a large-scale facade projection that transferred Hundertwasser's characteristic organic formal language and intense color palette into public space.

The exhibition, which with over 22,700 visitors became the second most successful in the history of the Kunsthaus, presented around 80 works by the Austrian artist, including 43 original prints, screen prints, lithographs, and Japanese woodblock prints. My facade projection visually interpreted Hundertwasser's philosophy of beauty as a "panacea" and his ecological commitment for the building's exterior facade.

The projection translated Hundertwasser's key motifs – the spiral structures, luminous color gradients, and organic forms – into a dynamic, large-format staging, making the art visible to the outside. In a time of Corona-related restrictions, the exterior projection offered additional publicly accessible access to art and amplified the exhibition's impact into Apolda's urban space.
